What’s strikes me about marketing on the Internet is the never-ending steam of new emerging media industries.  Just when you think you have one channel nearly mastered, another comes along only to taunt your online existence.  What’s even more ironic is that when your busy following emerging technologies and trends, you quickly begin to find your ineptitude in strong media skill sets.

Its very similar to becoming promoted to a higher position at your job.  Instead of working the trenches, your job becomes more macro oriented which by default means you lose contact to what you were originally close to. A good close friend of mine calls this being promoted to your “highest incompetence.”    

For me, that new emerging industry is called Newsmastering and apparently its been around for a while:) Like most things, I fell into it by accident by trying to solve a growing need that I have:  Filtering RSS feeds (define) for news content.  Coined by Robin Good, newsmastering is a new field that involves combining, remixing, and filtering RSS feeds into one useable format that’s better than the sum of its parts.  Hey don’t they call that synergy?  Maybe I can coin that definition as Newsergy?  Always wanted to be known for a new word…cant hurt me for trying!

So why should you care about newsmastering? 
Simply, it’s

the new unbroken code that is just in the early stages of being explored.  Unlike request based mediums such as search, newsmastering involves taking aggregate content that exists in putting it into a form that pleases the masses or individual preferences.   This new field has given birth to several new RSS filtering tools like FeedRinse and mySyndicaat (my favorite as of this writing).  But filtering is not as easy as it sounds.

For example, how do you know what’s newsworthy and what isn’t?  Its not like people use keywords like “news” when they are posting about news!  But keywords do play a part in the overall filtering mayhem.  Adult language for example can easily be filtrated to disallow fowl mouths and common spammers.  In addition, keywords are needed to focus content to particular categories and news channels.  As Robin Good puts it, Blogs are perfect for newsmastering because they already have a focused genre but just need a little tweaking before their overall aggregation.  I that this very true, because blogs are the essence of web filtering and newsmastering is the key to unlock the best of personally generated content…free from professionally fed news editors and columnists.   As they say, it cant get any better than that…the world at its finest.  Move over podcasting, blogging, and video e-mail.  Say hello to newsmastering!
